New Delhi | Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, cancelled his scheduled visit to Kerala due to the hospitalization of his mother Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to campaign in Kozhikode, an important political district in the Malabar region known for closely contested Assembly seats. His visit was expected to energise party workers and strengthen the United Democratic Front (UDF) campaign ahead of the April 9 assembly elections.

Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after facing health issues related to changing weather conditions. She is reported to be stable and under medical observation.

Due to this situation, Rahul Gandhi addressed the UDF rally through video conference from Delhi. Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Congress party, attended the event in person and led the campaign in Kozhikode.

During his address, Rahul Gandhi said he wanted to visit Kerala but had to stay back in Delhi to be with his mother. He said he shares a close and open relationship with the people of Kerala and believes they will understand his situation.

He also shared an emotional experience from the hospital. He said he spent the night in his mother’s room and was worried about her health. He praised a nurse from Kerala who took care of his mother throughout the night with dedication and kindness. He said such nurses represent the true spirit of Kerala, treating all patients equally with love and compassion, without any discrimination.

Rahul Gandhi also made political remarks, saying that there are mainly two sides in Kerala — the UDF and what he described as a partnership between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF). He said the UDF works to unite and empower people, while accusing the BJP and LDF of dividing people and not being accountable.

He criticised job promises made at the national and state levels, and said that employment opportunities have not improved.

He further alleged that opposition leaders are being targeted through cases and investigations by agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, and questioned why similar action is not seen against leaders in Kerala.

Speaking about the UDF’s plans, Rahul Gandhi announced the “Indira Guarantee” scheme. He said it includes free bus travel for women, ₹1,000 monthly support for college-going girls, increase in welfare pensions to ₹3,000 and health insurance coverage of ₹25 lakh per family under a new scheme. He also announced interest-free loans of up to ₹5 lakh for youth to start businesses.

He said these schemes will improve healthcare, create jobs and support families. He added that similar promises have already been fulfilled in Telangana and Karnataka.

In his final appeal, Rahul Gandhi urged the people of Kerala to vote in the April 9 elections, saying it is important for the future of youth, employment and protecting the secular values of the state. He called on voters to support the UDF and bring positive change.
