New Delhi | NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice-President of India. He won the contest with 452 first preference votes, defeating the Opposition’s candidate, retired Supreme Court judge Sudershan Reddy, who secured 300 votes. Radhakrishnan won with a margin of 152 votes.
PC Mody, Returning Officer and Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, informed that a total of 767 votes were cast in the election, of which 752 were valid and 15 were declared invalid.
In his congratulatory message on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.”
On the Opposition side, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on X that the Opposition had shown complete unity in the election. He claimed that all 315 Opposition MPs had voted, which was a 100% turnout. However, after the results, it was revealed that the Opposition candidate had received only 300 votes. This raised questions about the missing 15 votes, leading to speculation and debate in political circles.
With CP Radhakrishnan set to take oath as the 15th Vice-President of India, the focus now shifts to his role in upholding constitutional values and guiding parliamentary debates. While the Prime Minister’s message highlighted confidence in his leadership, the Opposition’s concerns over missing votes are expected to remain a subject of political discussion in the coming days.
