PM Narendra Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney Hold Talks to Strengthen India–Canada Relations

New Delhi | At the invitation of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, paid an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, 2026. This was Prime Minister Carney’s first visit to India after assuming office and the first bilateral visit to India by a Canadian Prime Minister since 2018. Prime Minister Carney was accompanied by a high-level delegation including senior ministers, provincial leaders and leading CEOs from Canada.

During the visit, both leaders commemorated 79 years of diplomatic relations between India and Canada and reaffirmed the importance of their partnership. They highlighted that the relationship between the two countries is built on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and a common commitment to the rule of law.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India and Canada share strong democratic traditions and that both countries will continue to strengthen their partnership. In a message shared on X, PM Modi welcomed Prime Minister Carney and described the visit as an important milestone in India–Canada relations. He said that the discussions between the two leaders focused on further strengthening cooperation for the benefit of the people of both nations.

The two Prime Ministers agreed to deepen economic cooperation and aim to increase bilateral trade to 50 billion dollars by the year 2030. PM Modi noted that investments by Canadian pension funds in India reflect strong confidence in India’s economic growth. The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, renewable energy and agriculture.

Both sides also emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties. They discussed increasing collaboration in education, cultural exchanges and other areas that bring the citizens of both countries closer.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, in his post on X, said that the visit marked not just a renewal but also an expansion of the Canada–India partnership with new ambition and focus. Responding to the message, PM Modi said that the visit has created a strong foundation for a renewed partnership based on trust, growth, innovation and shared prosperity for the people of both nations.

The visit is expected to open new opportunities for cooperation and further strengthen the long-standing friendship between India and Canada.
