PM Narendra Modi Addresses Indonesian Parliament, Receives Indonesia’s Highest Civilian Honour

Jakarta | Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day State Visit to Indonesia from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indonesian Parliament, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Parliament of Indonesia. He also held high-level talks with President Prabowo Subianto to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi said it was a great honour to speak before the Indonesian lawmakers. He said India and Indonesia are connected by centuries of shared history, culture and strong people-to-people ties. He expressed confidence that both countries would continue working together for a future based on friendship, cooperation and shared prosperity.

Prime Minister Modi said a new era has begun in the India-Indonesia partnership through the Ganga-Mahakam Vision. He explained that the vision is based on five key pillars – civilisational connect, shared development, security and strategic trust, maritime prosperity and a stronger voice for the Global South.

Referring to the G20, Prime Minister Modi said Indonesia’s G20 Presidency in 2022 and India’s Presidency in 2023 both worked to place the priorities of the Global South at the centre of the global agenda. He said both countries would continue to work together to strengthen the voice of developing nations.

Highlighting future areas of cooperation, the Prime Minister said sectors such as space, maritime technology, artificial intelligence, telecommunications and digital infrastructure offer great opportunities for deeper collaboration. He also said that the democratic values and cultural diversity of both countries further strengthen bilateral relations.

Emphasising the importance of maritime ties, Prime Minister Modi said that although Delhi and Jakarta are separated by thousands of kilometres by land, the sea brings the two countries much closer. He noted that the maritime connection remains central to the shared future of India and Indonesia.

During the visit, President Prabowo Subianto conferred upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi the ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’, the country’s highest civilian honour. The award was presented in recognition of his leadership and exceptional contribution to strengthening India-Indonesia relations. Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to the people of both countries and to their enduring civilisational ties.

Prime Minister Modi also held wide-ranging discussions with President Prabowo Subianto at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta. The leaders reviewed cooperation in trade, human development, agriculture, food security, healthcare, defence, security and maritime affairs. They also agreed to expand cooperation in emerging technologies, including space, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and Public Digital Infrastructure.

Describing the visit as comprehensive, substantive and forward-looking, Prime Minister Modi said its outcomes would further deepen the India – Indonesia partnership. He expressed confidence that the friendship between the two nations would continue to reach new heights in the years to come.
