New Delhi : In a major political step before the Vice-Presidential election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday announced Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the post of Vice President of India, the country’s second-highest constitutional office. The decision was taken at a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
CP Radhakrishnan, the present Governor of Maharashtra, a proud son of Tamil Nadu, is a textile industrialist, a noted table tennis and long-distance athlete, and has served as a two-time Lok Sabha MP.
After the announcement, Radhakrishnan expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “My heartfelt thanks to our beloved people’s leader, our most respected Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, for nominating me as the NDA Vice Presidential candidate and giving me the opportunity to serve the nation.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his congratulatory message, praised Radhakrishnan’s long years of public service. He said, “Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has rich experience as MP and Governor of various states. His parliamentary interventions were always incisive. During his gubernatorial tenures, he focused on addressing challenges faced by common citizens. These experiences ensured that he has vast knowledge of legislative and constitutional matters. I am confident he will be an inspiring Vice President.”
PM Modi further said, “In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with dedication, humility and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised. He has done extensive work at the grassroots in Tamil Nadu. I am glad that the NDA family has decided to nominate him as the Vice Presidential candidate of our alliance.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated Radhakrishnan. In his message, he said, “Congratulations to the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra Shri CP Radhakrishnan Ji on being nominated as the NDA’s candidate for the vice presidential election. Your roles as a parliamentarian and as governor of different states have played a significant role in effectively fulfilling constitutional duties. I am sure your vast experience and wisdom will enhance the prestige of the Upper House and achieve new milestones. Gratitude to PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji and all members of BJP Parliamentary Board for this decision.”
Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh has congratulated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on being announced as the Vice President candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
In his message, Rajnath Singh said, “Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on being announced as the Vice President candidate of NDA. He has devoted his life to serving the people. He has risen from the ground through hard work and is known for his vast administrative experience, wisdom and dynamism. He has also served the country in several capacities. I am confident he will be a great Vice President of our nation.”

With the NDA already having a comfortable majority in both Houses of Parliament, the election of CP Radhakrishnan as the next Vice President of India is seen as almost certain. His nomination reflects the confidence of the alliance in his leadership and long years of service to the nation.
