LoP Rahul Gandhi Demands Supreme Court-Monitored Probe into Student Protest Violence

New Delhi | Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi today strongly criticised the Central Government, alleging that students protesting peacefully in Delhi were subjected to excessive force by security personnel. Addressing a special Congress Party press conference at Indira Bhavan, the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi also claimed that he was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha on the issue.

Rahul Gandhi said that although members of the ruling party were allowed to speak in Parliament, he was denied the opportunity to raise the issue of the alleged attack on students. He said he was informed that he could continue speaking only if he apologised for his remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Rahul Gandhi said he refused to apologise, stating that it was his constitutional right as the Leader of Opposition to raise matters of public importance.

Speaking about the student protests, Rahul Gandhi alleged that peaceful protesters were fired upon with pellet guns, beaten with batons fitted with nails, and subjected to electric shock batons. He also claimed that facial recognition technology was being used to identify protesting students and alleged that attempts were being made to intimidate them from raising their voices in the future.

Rahul Gandhi said he met a student who had suffered serious eye injuries due to pellet gun fire and claimed that the student might permanently lose his eyesight. He also alleged that women students were beaten during the protests. He questioned who had authorised the use of force against the students and said that such action could not have taken place without the knowledge of the Union Home Ministry.

The Congress leader said there were only two possibilities: either Union Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered the use of force against the students, or he was unaware of what had happened. According to Rahul Gandhi, if the Home Minister had authorised the action, he was responsible for the incident, and if he was unaware, it reflected serious administrative failure. In either case, Rahul Gandhi demanded that Amit Shah be removed from the post of Union Home Minister.

Rahul Gandhi further demanded an independent high powered committee, monitored by the Supreme Court, to investigate the alleged attack on the students. He said the Opposition would continue to fight for justice and ensure accountability for those responsible for the incident.

Calling the protesting students “the future of the country,” Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government had no right to threaten, attack, or target them. He said students had committed no crime by raising their voices and praised their courage. He also thanked the students for standing up for their rights and expressed confidence that justice would ultimately prevail.
