Election Commission of India Implements Measures for Transparent Lok Sabha Polls in India

Patna (Bihar) | Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar addressed a press conference on Poll Preparedness for forthcoming General Elections to Lok Sabha – 2024 in Patna, Bihar before concluding his three day tour of the state for reviewing preparedness ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Addressing concerns over low voter turnout in Bihar, often referred to as the ‘mother of democracy’ and still inhabited by politically aware citizens.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken proactive measures to ensure free and fair elections. These measures include the use of technology to curb the influence of money and muscle power, along with strict enforcement actions against electoral malpractices.
The ECI has emphasized coordination among various government agencies including the police and excise departments to monitor and control the distribution of liquor, cash, freebies and drugs during the election period. Additionally, the Commission has highlighted the importance of deploying a host of government agencies, such as the State Police, Excise Department, DRI, ED, I-T, Forest Department and Postal Department to work in tandem to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

During a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar shared insights from meetings with political parties, where several key issues and suggestions were discussed. These included requests for early counting of postal ballots, transparency regarding the deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and an extension of voting hours to improve voter turnout. Kumar also assured voters of a safe and secure voting environment, urging them to participate in the electoral process without any fear or hesitation.
Moreover, political parties emphasized the need for accurate electoral rolls, proper deployment of paramilitary forces at polling booths, prevention of impersonation, accessibility of central observers, prioritized counting of postal ballots and timely information dissemination regarding EVMs.
The Election Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparent and inclusive elections by reaching out to every voter, even in remote areas to establish polling stations and facilitate their participation in the democratic process.

During preparations for Lok Sabha General Election 2024, Chief Election Commissioner Mr. Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Mr. Arun Goyal are conducting a review meeting with Bihar State General Commissioners, Police Inspector / Deputy Inspector of Police, all District Election Officers – Co-District Officers and Police Superintendents.
