Bengaluru | Dr. Rezwan Razack’s Museum of Indian Paper Money is set to unveil a unique numismatic art piece featuring 200 gold-plated 1955 One Pice coins on October 8, 2026.
The special installation transforms an everyday denomination from India’s early post-Independence coinage into a distinctive work of art and a tribute to the country’s monetary heritage.
The 1955 One Pice was one of the small denominations that formed part of the monetary system of young independent India. The 200 gold-plated coins have been arranged together in an elaborate composition framed in black and gold. The central monogram and decorative motifs give the installation the appearance of a commemorative artwork.
The One Pice may have been one of the smallest denominations in India’s monetary system, but coins such as these provide an important window into the economic and social history of the country.
The presentation of 200 individual coins together adds another dimension to the installation. Each coin represents a small part of India’s numismatic journey, while the complete display highlights the passage of time, the evolution of currency and the continuing interest in India’s monetary history.
The gold plating is symbolic and does not represent the intrinsic value of the original coins. Instead, it gives a humble denomination a visually striking presentation as a tribute to India’s heritage.
Speaking to Editor in Chief, Dr. B R Abdul Wajid, Prestige Group’s Co-Founder and Renowned Numismatist Dr. Rezwan Razack said coins should not be viewed only as objects of monetary value, but also as witnesses to history.
“Coins are not merely objects of monetary value. They are witnesses to history. Every coin has a story to tell about the country, its people, its economy and the times in which it circulated,” he said.
He said the installation presents a very small denomination from a different perspective and helps visitors appreciate its historical significance.
The display also shows how numismatic objects can go beyond traditional collecting and become part of art, design and cultural storytelling.
The new installation will be open to the public from October 8, 2026, at Rezwan Razack’s Museum of Indian Paper Money in Bengaluru. Visitors will be able to view the artwork along with the museum’s wider collection documenting India’s rich monetary history.
Founded by noted Indian numismatist Dr. Rezwan Razack, the museum is dedicated to preserving, documenting and showcasing the history of Indian paper currency and the broader story of India’s monetary heritage. It brings together rare and historically significant pieces and seeks to make India’s numismatic history accessible through carefully curated displays and storytelling.
“The unique installation offers visitors an opportunity to look at a humble denomination from India’s monetary history from a new perspective. By bringing together 200 gold-plated 1955 One Pice coins, the display combines history, art and numismatics, while highlighting the importance of preserving the country’s rich monetary heritage for future generations.”
