D K Shivakumar Takes Oath as Karnataka Chief Minister, Vows People-Centric Governance

Bengaluru | D K Shivakumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with other cabinet ministers in a grand ceremony at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday the 3rd June 2026. Before taking oath, he sought the blessings of his mother by touching her feet and later welcomed AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretary K. C. Venugopal along with Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on their arrival in Bengaluru. Holding a copy of the Constitution of India in his hand, Shivakumar took oath as Chief Minister.

Congratulating the new Chief Minister, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the people of Karnataka had placed their trust in the Congress party and that the government would continue to uphold its guarantees, social justice commitments and welfare programmes. He also thanked Siddaramaiah for his leadership and service to the state.

In his message, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar thanked the people of Karnataka, Congress leaders and party workers for their trust and support. He described the Chief Minister’s post as a sacred responsibility and promised to work tirelessly for the welfare, progress and aspirations of the people. He called upon farmers, workers, women, students, entrepreneurs and youth to join hands in building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous Karnataka.

Soon after assuming office, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to the statues of Jagadguru Basavanna, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru at Vidhana Soudha. He then visited the Chief Minister’s chamber and began his official duties, declaring that “Work is Worship.”

Addressing the media after chairing his first Cabinet meeting, Shivakumar said, “The Chief Minister’s chair does not belong to me; it belongs to the people.” He assured that every decision of his government would be taken collectively and would focus on serving the people of Karnataka. Drawing from his four decades of political experience, he pledged to provide effective leadership and leave behind a positive legacy.

Later, while attending a felicitation programme at the KPCC office, Shivakumar said the Congress party’s history is closely linked with the history of the nation. Describing the Congress office as a temple for party workers, he said he would remain connected to the organisation despite becoming Chief Minister. He urged party workers to strengthen the Congress at the grassroots level and continue serving the people.

“The chair belongs to the people, and I will dedicate myself to their service,” Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said, reaffirming his commitment to transparent, inclusive and people-oriented governance.
