Bengaluru | In a significant move aimed at addressing the healthcare needs of Karnataka’s aspirational districts, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has penned a letter (dated 29-01-2024) to Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, advocating for the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raichur. Citing the region’s pressing requirement for advanced medical facilities, Siddaramaiah emphasized Raichur’s suitability as the location for this crucial healthcare institution.

Raichur, situated within the Kalyana Karnataka region, is identified as an aspirational district grappling with disparities in healthcare, education, and per capita income levels compared to other regions in the state. The proposed AIIMS in Raichur aims to bridge this gap by providing high-quality medical services and serving as a referral center for the surrounding areas.

In his letter dated 17th June 2023, addressed to Shri Mansukh L Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, Siddaramaiah underscored the urgent need for a top-tier medical facility in Raichur. He highlighted the prolonged pending status of the proposal to establish an AIIMS in Karnataka and urged the Union Finance Minister to prioritize the inclusion of AIIMS Raichur in the forthcoming Budget of 2024-25.

Acknowledging the crucial role that AIIMS Raichur would play in enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality in the region, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed optimism for concerted action from the Union Finance Minister. With this proactive initiative, Karnataka aims to address the healthcare needs of its underserved regions and bolster its healthcare infrastructure for improved public health outcomes.
