New Delhi | In a big decision, the Union Government has announced that caste enumeration will be included in the upcoming national census. The government assured that this exercise will be carried out in a transparent manner.
Reacting to this development, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, addressed a press conference at the Congress office in New Delhi on Wednesday the 30 April 2025.
He said, “We have been demanding a caste census for a long time. Earlier, the Modi government opposed it. We don’t know why they were against it. But now, they have suddenly decided to go ahead. We welcome this move.”
Rahul Gandhi, however, asked the government to clearly announce the timeline for its implementation. He also said that Telangana can be a model for this census, as the state has already conducted a successful and detailed caste census. He suggested that the Central Government should learn from Telangana’s methods and include such effective practices in the national process.
He also raised two important issues. First, he spoke about the 50% cap on reservations, which he said is becoming a barrier for the progress of backward castes, Dalits, and Adivasis. He strongly demanded that this cap should be removed.
Secondly, he urged the government to implement Article 15(5), which provides for reservations in private educational institutions. He said this law already exists and must be enforced immediately.
Rahul Gandhi praised all Congress workers and the people who supported the demand for a caste census. He said, “I feel proud of each and every Congress worker and all those activists — especially from backward communities, Dalits, and Adivasis — who worked hard for this campaign. This victory belongs to them.”
He called the inclusion of caste census a major achievement and said the Congress Party will continue to fight for social justice and equality.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Today, I went to Kanpur and met the family whose son was killed in a very brutal manner in the Pahalgam terror attack. This family is in deep pain and sorrow.”
He added that in this shocking attack, 28 people were brutally killed and many others were injured. Calling it an act of cruelty, he said, “The terrorists will have to pay for this. No matter where they are, they must be held accountable.”
He emphasized the need for a strong and clear response to terrorism. “We must give a befitting reply to such attacks — not with fear or hesitation, but with full strength — so that terrorists know this cannot be done with India,” he said.
