Kolkata | India is preparing for a busy election year in 2026. Assembly elections will be held in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry. These elections are likely to take place between March and May. Along with this, several major States will also conduct urban local body elections during the year.
In West Bengal, elections for all 294 seats of the Legislative Assembly are expected in March–April 2026. The current Assembly’s term ends on 7 May 2026. In the 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) returned to power with a big victory, winning 213 out of 294 seats and Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister again. A party needs 148 seats to form the government in the State.
The TMC has been ruling West Bengal since 2011 under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP became the main Opposition party by winning 77 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC won 29 out of 42 seats, while the BJP secured 12.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking her fourth consecutive term in 2026. If she succeeds, she will become the first woman in India to achieve this record. Earlier, J. Jayalalithaa had served five non-consecutive terms as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Ahead of the West Bengal elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with BJP MPs and MLAs in Kolkata. He instructed the party leaders to spend more time in their constituencies and strengthen their connection with the people.
Addressing the media at a press conference in Kolkata, Amit Shah said that the BJP will form the government in West Bengal with a two-thirds majority in the 2026 Assembly elections. He said that people of Bengal are unhappy due to fear, corruption, misgovernance and infiltration under the TMC government, and are now ready for change.
Amit Shah said, “As soon as a BJP government is formed, a strong security grid will be created to stop infiltration. Women in Bengal are feeling unsafe under Mamata Banerjee’s rule and want to remove the TMC. In terms of political violence, TMC has even crossed the record of the Communists. The time for change has come, and the people will give a strong reply.”
Amit Shah accused the TMC of allowing infiltration to change the demography and build its vote bank. He also alleged that corruption has grown during the 14 years of TMC rule and that money meant for the poor is being misused by the party’s workers. Amit Shah said that the people of Bengal will soon demand accountability from the government.

As West Bengal moves closer to the 2026 Assembly elections, the political atmosphere in the State is becoming more intense. With the BJP sharpening its campaign and the TMC preparing to defend its long rule, the coming months are expected to witness a high-energy political battle. All eyes will now be on how voters respond to the issues of governance, development, security and political violence raised by both sides. The 2026 elections will not only decide the future leadership of West Bengal but also shape the political direction of the State for the years ahead.
