India and Saudi Arabia Sign Bilateral Haj Agreement 2024, Focus on Ease for Pilgrims

Jeddah, KSA / 07th Jan 2024 – In a significant development, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, along with Shri. V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, has successfully signed the Bilateral Haj Agreement 2024 with H.E. Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The agreement solidifies a total quota of 1,75,025 pilgrims from India for Haj 2024, with a noteworthy allocation of 1,40,020 seats reserved for pilgrims through the Haj Committee of India. This move is expected to significantly benefit first-time pilgrims aiming to undertake the Haj pilgrimage in 2024. Additionally, 35,005 pilgrims will have the opportunity to proceed through Haj Group Operators.
During the discussions with the Minister of Hajj and Umrah, KSA expressed admiration for the digital initiatives of the Government of India aimed at facilitating and promoting ease and convenience for Indian Haj pilgrims. The efforts include providing crucial last-mile information to pilgrims. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has graciously offered to extend all possible assistance to support these digital initiatives. The meeting also highlighted the Government of India’s initiative to encourage participation under the Ladies without Mehram (LWM) category, a move that was deeply appreciated and lauded by the Saudi side.
Following the signing of the Bilateral Haj Agreement and the productive discussions with the Minister of Hajj and Umrah, KSA, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, accompanied by Shri. Muraleedharan, visited the Haj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah. The purpose of this visit was to personally oversee the arrangements for Haj pilgrims and explore ways to enhance logistics and monitoring mechanisms for the convenience of Indian Haj pilgrims. This proactive approach reflects the commitment of the Indian government to ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience for its citizens undertaking the sacred pilgrimage.
This collaborative effort between India and Saudi Arabia marks a pivotal moment in strengthening bilateral ties and fostering an environment that prioritizes the well-being and convenience of Haj pilgrims. The commitment to leveraging digital solutions and addressing the unique needs of pilgrims demonstrates the forward-thinking approach of both nations in enhancing the Haj pilgrimage experience.

The Saudi delegation expressed sincere appreciation for India’s exceptional digital initiatives, particularly in providing essential last-mile information to pilgrims. Our proposal to encourage participation of women without Mehram in Haj pilgrimage further underscores our commitment to inclusivity.
Discussions also encompassed plans for the enhancement of medical facilities, ensuring the comprehensive well-being of all pilgrims. I deeply value the collaborative spirit exhibited during these deliberations and eagerly anticipate the continued fortification of our bilateral relations.”
In her another post on X, Union Minister Smriti Zubin Irani said that
“Visited King Abdul Aziz International Airport’s Haj Terminal in Jeddah @KAIAirport today to assess ground support systems and coordination between Saudi authorities and the Indian consulate.
Explored ways to enhance logistics and monitoring mechanisms for a seamless Haj pilgrimage journey for Indians. Thousands of seats have been reserved for Indian pilgrims and facilitating first time travellers.” Smriti Irani tweeted.
