The new government led by Vijay enjoys the support of 120 MLAs, crossing the required majority mark of 118 seats in the Assembly. Important support came from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), both extending unconditional support with two MLAs each. Earlier, support from Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) helped TVK comfortably cross the majority mark.

Political observers are calling this a historic development as Vijay’s government becomes the first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in nearly 60 years in Tamil Nadu.

After taking oath, Chief Minister Vijay visited Fort St. George, where the Secretariat and Chief Minister’s office are located, and officially took charge by signing important government files. In his address after the ceremony, Chief Minister Vijay assured the people that his government would provide smooth, honest and transparent governance for all sections of society.

Among the first important decisions signed by the new Chief Minister were files related to providing 200 units of free electricity, creating a special unit for women’s safety and establishing a dedicated unit to tackle drug smuggling in the State.
