Kolkata | Suvendu Adhikari created history by becoming the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal. He took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of the state at the famous Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata today. The oath of office was administered by R. N. Ravi, Governor of west Bengal.

Suvendu Adhikari succeeded Mamata Banerjee, who had been serving as the Chief Minister for the last 15 years since 2011. The oath-taking ceremony became a historic moment in the political history of West Bengal as BJP formed its first-ever government in the state.

The ceremony was held on the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore according to the Bengali calendar, known as Pochishe Boishakh. During the programme, tributes were paid to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, whose thoughts and literary works continue to inspire the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, Union Cabinet Ministers and several senior BJP leaders attended the grand ceremony.

In his message shared on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described 9th May 2026 as a historic and unforgettable day. He said the formation of the first BJP Government in West Bengal marked the beginning of a new chapter of hope, dignity and good governance for the people of the state.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Suvendu Adhikari and praised him as a leader who has remained closely connected with the people and understood their aspirations. He expressed confidence that the new Chief Minister would work sincerely for the development and progress of West Bengal.

The Prime Minister also congratulated BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik on taking oath as Ministers in the new government. He appreciated their grassroots work and dedication towards public service.

Remembering Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Prime Minister Modi said the BJP government in West Bengal would work to fulfil his vision and ideals for the state and the nation. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also met veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar and appreciated his lifelong contribution towards strengthening the party in West Bengal.

The formation of the first BJP Government in West Bengal is being seen as a major political change in the state and has attracted attention from across the country.

While in New Delhi after the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election results, Dr. B. R.
