Kananaskis, Alberta | Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met the Prime Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Mark Carney, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta.

This was the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders after Prime Minister Carney took office following Canada’s recent general elections. The meeting was an opportunity for both leaders to have open and forward-looking talks about India-Canada relations and the future direction of their partnership.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney stressed the importance of strong ties between India and Canada. They spoke about shared values such as democracy, respect for the law, and the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Both sides agreed to take constructive and respectful steps to improve their relations, starting with the early return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals. They also decided to resume high-level ministerial and working-level talks to rebuild trust and give new energy to the relationship.

The two leaders explored possibilities for collaboration in key areas like clean energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, liquefied natural gas (LNG), food security, critical minerals, higher education, skilled worker mobility, and supply chain resilience. They also shared the goal of promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Restarting the stalled talks on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) was also discussed, with the aim of reaching a full Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in the future. They instructed their officials to continue discussions on this matter.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney welcomed the progress made at the G7 Summit and expressed their commitment to work together on global issues like climate change, sustainable development, and inclusive growth.

They appreciated the strong people-to-people ties between India and Canada and agreed to build on this “living bridge” for mutual benefit. Both leaders decided to stay in touch and looked forward to meeting again soon.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

> “Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law. PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship. Areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilisers and more offer immense potential in this regard.”
