New Delhi | The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the NCT of Delhi Assembly elections. Voting will take place in a single phase on February 5 and the results will be declared on February 8. A total of 1.55 crore voters are expected to cast their votes to elect members for Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies, out of which 12 seats are reserved.
There will be 13,033 polling stations across the city to facilitate voting. The last date to file nominations is January 17 and candidates can withdraw their names until January 20.
Speaking at a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar highlighted that over 2 lakh first-time voters will participate in this election. Special arrangements will be made to ensure smooth access to polling booths for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities.
Responding to allegations of tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Mr. Kumar reassured that the machines are tamper-proof and not hackable. He said, “All claims of manipulation have been thoroughly investigated and disproved. EVM technology has always upheld the principles of free and fair elections.”
The Election Commission also urged political parties to maintain dignity and follow election norms. Mr. Kumar stated that strict checks would be conducted to ensure the elections are money-free and fair. He added, “During recent elections, we faced backlash for checking helicopters and other vehicles. But such measures are necessary to maintain a level playing field.”
