New Delhi : The people’s mandate in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections was announced today. Although the BJP fell short of a majority, the NDA comfortably crossed the 272-seat mark.
AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Rahul Gandhi addressed the media in which CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was also present during the press conference at the AICC Headquarters today in New Delhi. Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the mandate reflects the people’s opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He described the BJP’s failure to secure a majority as a “moral defeat” for Narendra Modi. Kharge emphasized that the results indicate a clear rejection of Modi’s leadership.
“This election result is the ‘janta ka result’. It is evident that this mandate is against Narendra Modi. This is his moral and political defeat,” said AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi while addressing the media during the press conference today, he spoke about the broader implications of the recent elections. He emphasized that the fight was not just against a political party but against the BJP and its influence over India’s institutions, including intelligence agencies, CBI and ED. According to Gandhi, these institutions have been captured, threatened and intimidated by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
Rahul Gandhi stressed that the primary objective was to protect the Constitution. He recalled incidents such as the cancellation of their bank account, the imprisonment of chief ministers and the breaking up of parties, which fueled his belief that the people of India would come together to defend the Constitution. This belief, he noted, has been vindicated.
Expressing his gratitude, Gandhi thanked the people of India, the partners in the India Alliance and all the leaders and workers of the Congress party. He acknowledged their crucial role in preserving the Constitution. Throughout the election, the Congress party showed respect for its India Alliance partners, working together in unity wherever the alliance contested.
Gandhi highlighted that the Congress party, through the India Alliance, has presented a new vision for India – one that is pro-poor and pro-production. He mentioned that the country has clearly voiced its rejection of Narendra Modi, sending a strong message against the manner in which Modi and Shah have attacked the Constitution over the past ten years.
He expressed pride in the participation of the poorest sections of society – including laborers, farmers, Dalits, tribals and backward classes – in defending the Constitution. Gandhi extended his heartfelt thanks to all these groups.
Rahul Gandhi assured that the Congress party stands with the people and is committed to fulfilling the promises made during the campaign, including the caste census and the Mahalaxmi scheme.
