New Delhi | In a scathing critique of the Modi government’s handling of unemployment, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of All India Congress Committee (AICC), took to Twitter X @kharge  to express grave concerns over the dire situation faced by the youth of India. Kharge lamented the “pathetic apathy” of the current administration, attributing the ever-rising unemployment rates to a bleak future for the nation’s young population.

Citing recent reports from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Indian Human Development (IHD), Kharge highlighted alarming statistics. According to the latest ILO report, a staggering 83% of jobless individuals in India belong to the youth demographic. Furthermore, only 17.5% of rural youth are engaged in regular employment, indicating a stark disparity in opportunities between urban and rural areas.

The stagnation in industrial and manufacturing sectors, with employment levels remaining unchanged since 2012 at 26% of the total workforce, adds to the grim picture painted by Kharge. Additionally, data reveals a troubling decline in youth participation in economic activities, dropping from 42% in 2012 to 37% in 2022, under the current government’s tenure.

Kharge compared the present scenario unfavorably with the Congress-led UPA government, asserting that fewer young people are now involved in economic activities due to a severe scarcity of jobs under the Modi administration. Highlighting the severity of the situation, he emphasized that youth unemployment has tripled since 2012.

In response to the crisis, the Indian National Congress (INC) unveiled its ambitious “YUVA NYAY” initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment. The initiative includes “BHARTI BHAROSA,” promising to fill around 30 lakh vacant positions in the Union Government. Additionally, “PEHLI NAUKRI PAKKI” guarantees apprenticeship opportunities with an annual assistance of ₹1 lakh for degree and diploma holders.

The party also vows to tackle issues such as paper leaks with the introduction of new legislation and ensure social security and improved working conditions for those engaged in the gig economy. Furthermore, a ₹5,000 crore fund named “YUVA ROSHINI” is proposed to be established, with allocations to each district to foster youth development.

In a final swipe at the Modi government, Kharge reminded the public of the unfulfilled promise of creating 20 crore jobs in 10 years, accusing the administration of snatching away more than 12 crore jobs from the youth. As the battle against unemployment rages on, the unveiling of “YUVA NYAY” signifies Congress’s commitment to providing tangible solutions to this pressing issue plaguing the nation’s youth.
